RAM / Phalanx[edit]

If Phalanx is 'less capable' please cite source that says it is less capable and explain why RAM is 'more capable'. This article doesn't currently support the 'less capable' remark so adding it is just someones opinion. --Dual Freq 10:56, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

That's better. --Dual Freq 19:56, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Phalanx is 'less capable' because its max. range is between 2000-3000 meters, a fraction of the range of RAM. The expected real-world kill-distance of an incoming anti-ship missile for Phalanx is about 500 m or less, still close enough to possibly cause damage to the ship and everyone on board soiling their pants. Phalanx can engage one target at a time, while RAM can engage several targets simultaneously. Phalanx is useless against supersonic, erratically maneuvering missiles (like SS-N-27 'Sizzler') because it cannot predict target course. Phalanx cannot engage missiles faster than mach 2; RAM can. Phalanx has a limited kill probability since it fires kinetic-only rounds; even a direct hit doesn't ensure destruction of the incoming missile, while RAM uses a continuous rod warhead of the Sidewinder; no direct hit is required for destruction of the target. This makes RAM 'more capable'.
'Phalanx cannot predict target course' -- Got a reference for this? Seems like a necessary feature of a guidance system for a weapons system whose target moves >2km during the projectile travel time. Even if the target was assumed to have no motion normal to the firing platform, CIWS would need to put the beaten zone far, far ahead of the last known position of the threat. 216.96.229.181 (talk) 14:50, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

SeaRam and Evolve system[edit]

I'm removing the blurb about the 'evolve system' because it is vague and I believe relates to the SeaRAM version below it. If I'm wrong please clean-up this part of the article.Mdewman6 (talk) 04:05, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Reloading[edit]

Is it possible for a ship's crew to reload the RAM launcher on their own (ie without port facilities or a tender ship)? If not, the fact that it only carries either 21 or 11 missiles (depending on the type of launcher used) seems like a very severe tactical limitation. 71.203.209.0 00:19, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it can be reloaded by the crew. See http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/RIM-116_Rolling_Airframe_Missile The last picture shows the reloading process:http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:RIM-116_Rolling_Airframe_Missile_Launcher_Practice_device.jpg

Which Units[edit]

Is there a list available which USN units are armed with the RAM?

I was just looked on the DDG-51 article it saya that on the destroyers the ESSM will replace the Phalanx system. But afaik the ESSM is a short-range missile not a phalanx-system. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.54.180.230 (talk) 18:11, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

I am just speculating here but this appears to have developed out of the mindset that the primary use of CIWS was close-in missile defense while in later years, especially after the Cole-incident surface targets like RHIBS and fast attack craft came into focus again. The use of phalanx as a last-resort weapon against (supersonic) AShMs became very doubtful, especially after closer examination of former soviet AShMs, hence the US participation in RAM development. Starting with Phalanx Blk 1B the multirole capability of Phalanx seems to be more important than pure CIWS capability against missiles, therefore all DDG-51s do now have at least one CIWS and all Phalanx are in the process of upgrading to Blk 1B. RAM still is the primary CIWS system on ships where last-resort defense against missiles is deemed more important, such as on CVNs and it is used in conjunction with Phalanx, such as on LHA-6. 123.208.81.232 (talk) 09:44, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Range-wise, both Phalanx and RAM fall under VSHORAD (very short range) as neither can reach outside 5km zone. Before you quote me on this, the range of RAM is still secret, but it is estimated, per comparison to missiles of similar size and age, to be at least twice that of Phalanx. ESSM range is around 50 km according to most sources, or 27nm/30miles. That's SHORAD, or short range. This in turn means OTH capacity, as a sensor at a height of 30 meters will see horizon a bit shy of 20km away. At - again, unconfirmed - max of 4 mach, ESSM has radically larger intercept zone than either Phalanx or RAM. And to understand what the HELL are the reasons, just look at speeds. Modern ASM, esp. soviet, will be high subsonic all the way to mach 3, depending on type. This means, that the SLOWEST of them will be in range of Phalanx for about 10 seconds, at best, and the fastest of the ASMs will be in that zone for as short as 3 seconds. Wa-totem (talk) 17:55, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

USN units armed with RAM - there may be no such list. All CVNs should have 2-each RAM by now and upgraded to Block-1, (even decommissioned K-Hawk CV-63, Connie CV-64, JFK CV-67 had RAM). All LPD-17s are being built with 2-each RAM B1. Other Amphibs, LHA-1, LHD-1 and LSD-41/49 classes have all had 2-ea RAM for quite a while, upgraded to B1. Even some remaining Spruance DD-963 destroyers had a RAM GML installed aft on their fantail before decommissioning and/or break-up. Newer and smaller LCS-2 platforms may integrate a version of single RAM, perhaps using the Weapons Direction & Control (WD&C) software component of SSDS Mk 2 (or Mk 1). Very old FFG-7, may be resurrecting plans for RAM backfits just prior to decommisioning and/or foreign military sales; (problem on FFGs has always been how to integrate with a new or modified fire control system which would be fast enough to tell RAM where to point and shoot. The obsolecent AN/UYK-7 based weapons control processors (with large cathode ray tube AN/UYA-4 displays) are not fast enough against today's ASCMs). 2nd problem with FFGs has been real estate, where topside to put the launcher; old plans had it between phalanx CIWS Mk 15 and Smoke-Stack; newer plans may include midship location of former Separate Target Illuminating Radar (STIR) Mk 54 (between 76mm gun and Main mast), or maybe a Sea-RAM in place of phalanx CIWS Mk 15; the Mk-13 GMLS location forward would be an even worser Green-Water loading problem than on the CVN-68 (Big Wave loss of 2001). 144.183.224.2 (talk) 20:13, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Navy Companionship (sea-RAM)[edit]

The use of term 'companion' systems for Sea-RAM and CIWS may imply to casual readers that these heavy-weight systems, Sea-RAM and CIWS, are somewhere used together simultaneously (as in side-by-side companions) on the same ship, and not used as one-or-the-other but never both. Suggest a separate article for Sea-RAM (separate from CIWS and separate from RAM (regular RAM GMLS Mk 49)).[Seems like a particular issue for wikipedia that seems to prefer organizing articles by weapon delivery systems (I.E. RIM-116 missile) rather than by the weapon system (I.E. RAM GMWS Mk 31 including lauching system RAM GMLS Mk 49)].Perhaps it might mention that 11-cell SeaRAM weapon system may be a lower-cost alternative to 21-cell RAM GMLS Mk 49 since the host combat system on a proposed ship platform would not have to be acquired, modified or re-designed in order to integrate RAM, (I.E. provide a fire control system - telling RAM where to point and shoot its missiles). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.183.224.2 (talk) 21:10, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Big Wave washes away RAM Launcher from ship[edit]

Can anyone find any other links to the forward RAM launcher onboard USS Nimitz CVN-68 being washed away by a big wave during the 2001-2002 sail around horn of South America from east coast Hampton Roads (RCOH) to its west coast homeport? Afterwards a wave break structure was then installed or modified to be taller.

Modifications to FFG-7 class[edit]

'There are plans in place to equip Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates with RAM launchers.' I don't think this refers to US frigates. There are very few remaining with the remaining due to be decommissioned within a few years, and it's doubtful the Navy would spend that kind of money upgrading a ship on its way out. --Funkychinaman (talk) 16:41, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

RIM-116 is NOT rolled to obtain in-flight stability[edit]

The main article states that the RIM-166 'rolls around the longitudinal axis to stabilize the flight path much like a bullet.'

This is totally incorrect. In order for the missile to be spin stabilized, it would have to roll at a rate of several Kilohertz which can be verified by analysis of the gyroscopic motion. At this roll rate, the internal stresses would be so high, the missile would tear itself apart. The statement should be revised to reflect that spin stability is not the reason for imparting roll to the RIM-116 airframe. 66.62.17.2 (talk) 15:24, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for that, but do you have a link or reference that explains what the purpose of the rolling is. How is the missile stabilized? --Dual Freq (talk) 20:53, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

The primary reason for rolling the airframe is to save on cost of both the control actuator system and the seeker angle resolver capability. The single set of control surfaces are phased with deflection commands to achieve pitch and yaw motion. The rolling seeker head has two passive RF antennas that can determine angle via interferometry in pitch and yaw due to the roll. A good description of this weapon is found in the document: dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA390349‎ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.62.17.2 (talk) 18:21, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Li found himself strolling through the docks.

The sun had recently set, leaving a little smattering of natural remaining, but by now, most of the buildings around the docks, mostly taverns for rowdy sailors, had put lit and put up lanterns to fight against the encroaching dark.

Today was an eerily quiet.

Riviera usually had a nice breeze flowing through it that supposedly turned into harsh and whipping winds in winter, but for now, during the golden heights of summer, the breeze was tame, flowing in little lulls that soothed the scorching sun.

But there was absolutely no breeze today, making all the little barges and boats seem to float above the dockside water in suspended animation, their sails completely still. Clouds thronged overhead, dark and heavy, filled to the brim with rain.

Li knew that Riviera had a thriving fis.h.i.+ng market as Perle, the name of the lake that bordered Riviera, teemed with fish while having few monsters. As its name indicated, there were also deposits of oysters holding pearls at the bottom of the lake, but many did not venture into these deepest depths as the monsters that dive swim around Perle tended to congregate there.

It would not have been odd to see fishermen drawing in their nets around this time, but they had all retired, likely because they felt the clouds overhead to be signs of an incoming storm. Though, a storm should have heralded stronger winds. Or perhaps its was this unnatural combo of still winds and dark clouds that drove them away even further.

Regardless, Li pushed forwards, rather enjoying this solitude. Like this, with n.o.body around to drum up an urban clatter, Riviera was far more tolerable, though he figured this thinking was somewhat spoiled considering even the tiniest of cities back in his old world would have blown this tiny little medieval city out of the water with noise and pollution.

Li found that Iona lived at the very end of the docks, isolated from the fis.h.i.+ng activity. She lived in a first floor flat, a small housing unit inside a larger building, but he could tell this building was on its last legs. It was a nondescript, rundown old two story building of yellowed plaster, rot-infested wood, and faded brick with holes covered with cloth acting as windows.

Not too surprising, considering where he was.

Riviera was split into three parts, lower, middle, and upper, with increasing verticality generally indicating wealth. The n.o.ble estates stood above all three parts and was its own gated and segregated community.

The docks were nestled right between its lower and middle sections. Here, though, Li noted, must have been just as cheap and bad as a lower residence.

Since the city, by virtue of it being built up elevated land, sloped downwards, sewage was dealt with by dumping it into deep gutters that allowed it to flow down into sewers with underground treatment centers existing in lower Riviera to deal with the waste.

However, this was a new innovation on part of the d.u.c.h.ess's rule, and Riviera had stood as a city for centuries. Before her rule, sewage flowed directly out into the lake, and this building stood right beside a gutter that funneled acc.u.mulated sewage from middle and upper Riviera out into lake Perle nearby.

Li could smell the foul stench of refuse curling up from the ground and into his nose, but he could easily tune it out. Like how he could tune out the sight of b.l.o.o.d.y and beaten corpses – he could also tune out biological reactions of disgust. He stepped into the building, strolling through a creaking, moldy door.

The inside of the building was musty, and as he closed the door behind him, he could hear the scurrying of scared rats and c.o.c.kroaches and other vermin. Li walked through a small hallway with flanked by little doors that led into large rooms that people lived in.

According to Alexei, Iona lived in the farthest unit down, and as he made his way there, he noticed just how quiet it was even in here.

A little too quiet. He focused his hearing, and he realized n.o.body lived here aside from Iona herself, whose footsteps he could hear pattering atop flimsy floorboards.

'And who might you be?' came a croaky voice br.i.m.m.i.n.g with caution.

Li stopped in front of a woman standing in front of Iona's door, her arms crossed. She looked the definition of haggard, bone thin with frayed, chin length blonde hair and sunken in black eyes. She looked like she could have been anywhere from twenty to forty, and as he sensed her life force, he did not feel anything off about her.

She was just human.

'I'm here on some business,' said Li, his tone firm, clearly indicating he was in no mood to engage with a random tenant in this building.

'The good lady's not in tonight,' said the woman as she stood over the door, blocking. Her accent was thick, much like Old Thane's. In other words, she was not educated, which was not much of a surprise. 'Yer' gonna have to tell me why a strange foreigner's rearin' his head up in this abandoned place.'

'The lady's my a.s.sistant, and I don't really have time for this nonsense, so-,' Li stepped forwards, but the woman would not budge.

Li shrugged, preparing to subdue her with a [Sleep Spore], but the door opened in time, inwards so that it did not hit the woman, and out came a girl not much older than five. By the way she hugged at the woman's legs, it was evident she was her daughter.

Iona poked her head through the door, and when she spotted Li, her eyes widened.

Immediately, Iona waved to the other end of the hallway, motioning the mother daughter duo to leave.

'Are you sure?' said the woman as she eyed Li. 'He's foreign, ain't around here, never seen the likes o' him before.'

'It is fine, Ada. Your daughter is doing fine. Take her and leave,' said Iona, her tone calm and didactic, as if she were talking to a pair of children.

https://onlinecasinoswithfreesignupbonuses-gemsdeposit.peatix.com. Ada nodded before leaving, continuing to give Li a suspicious eye as she stepped around him in the narrow hallway, like he was irradiated or something.

'Now, what was that about?' said Li as he heard Ada and her daughter leave the building.

'I perform some healing when I have time,' said Iona as she continued to peek at Li through the crook of the door.

'How generous of you. Here I thought you didn't care much about mortals.'

'I condemn their actions as a collective, but I understand that they are still comprised of precious individual lives.'

https://4destluniaroon.wixsite.com/wifisoftware/post/tencent-for-mac. 'I see. Now then, I'm sorry to be barging in on your house without warning, but I had something to discuss with you. Mind if I come in?'

Iona paused as her eyes flitted away from Li's. 'This filthy place is not fit for one such as you.'

'I don't care about that kind of small stuff.' Li pushed his hand on the door, applying enough pressure to let her know he was coming in whether she wanted to protest or not, and she yielded, letting him step into her room.

'Not too bad, all things considered,' said Li as he scanned his surroundings. Iona's flat was essentially the size of a large room. There was a small lantern atop a wooden table that emitted a faint light not nearly strong enough to illuminate the whole place. A couple of blankets sprawled around one edge of the room indicated a bed.

A set of herbalist equipment with racks of vials, droppers, beakers, and the like were neatly stacked and arranged atop the table. Aside from that, though, the room was very bare, though there were a couple of books stacked beside her blankets. New books, it seemed from their s.h.i.+ning leather.

Li had lived in similar conditions when he was a broke student struggling to stay afloat while studying and working all day, so he did not think much of these living arrangements. He took a seat by the table and motioned for her to sit.

When she did, he pointed to the blankets and said, 'I didn't know you had to sleep.'

'I have some mortal needs from consuming their souls,' she said with a sigh. 'I can survive off of sunlight alone, but I have come to need some sleep as well. I consider these needs an apt punishment for my foolishness.'

'And a need to drink as well?' Li tilted his head forwards, motioning beside her bed where several empty bottles lay haphazardly on their sides.

Iona glanced at the bottles with a cringe. 'Those…are from times best forgotten. As my being has taken in human souls, gaining more of their physical traits, needs, and their powerful emotions, I felt ever more strongly how my existence held no meaning. Hunted down with none of my kind left and my way of life, the reasons for which I was created, destroyed.

I saw that humans could drown their worries away so easily with drink, and I wished the same for myself.'

She shook her head and changed the topic, her voice becoming stronger and calmer. 'But that is before I met you, when I felt there was no reason for my existence as a forest spirit. But with you here, my life and being is in order, you need not doubt that.

Now, please tell me what you wished to talk about, for I am certain that I can be of a.s.sistance.'

Li also felt that it was best to move on from the matter of her drinking, evident as it was that it was part of a troubled past.

'I'm here to get your guidance on something somewhat drastic I wanted to do.'

Video poker machine secrets. 'Oh?'

Twixl publisher pro plug in for adobe indesign 10 3. 'I'm going to try and expand my farm to grow a lot more crop, not to mention different types of it, and for that, I'm going to get all the farmers back to work on their fields under me.'

Iona c.o.c.ked her head. 'The dispossessed farmers? They are all city dwellers now. Many years it has been since their hands have held a plow.'

'Right,' Li nodded. 'But it doesn't matter that they're rusty at farming. Skills can fade. But faith is far more resistant to time. People can hold onto it for the rest of their years, h.e.l.l, they can entirely entrust their lives to it. They just need someone to rekindle their faith to get back farming, something to believe in.
